Here we are again with another review in my oral care products series. With so many new brands and products on the market in oral care, I am like a kid in a candy store when I walk down my local Target oral care aisle! Today’s review features a brand that is quickly gaining momentum in the non toxic living market.
I am a really big fan of some of the Native products, in particular the aluminum free deodorant, so I was super excited when I saw the brand in the toothpaste aisle! In general, Native products are a bit pricey, so I knew I needed to give this a try and give my honest thoughts on if it is worth the extra cost or not. The brand overall features products that support a non toxic living lifestyle, using natural and quality ingredients. Their oral care line features 2 flavors of both fluoridated and non fluoridated toothpastes. For this review I tried the Wild Mint flavor in the fluoridated variety. Read on to hear my thoughts!
Note: This product was purchased with my own money, and all thoughts and opinions are my own. This post is not sponsored in any way by the Native brand.
Packaging Claims
The toothpaste claims to be formulated with clean ingredients, providing long lasting freshness, and the ability to whiten teeth without added chemicals.
Ingredient Specifics
True to the Native brand, this toothpaste formulation sticks to the natural basics, using plant derived and natural occurring mineral cleaners (sodium cocoyl glutamate, cocamidopropyl betaine) and whitening agents (silica). The formulation does not include any SLS/SLES, triclosan, or sulfates. The toothpaste has xylitol which acts as both an anti cavity agent as well as natural sweetener and peppermint oil for a natural fresh flavor.
First Impression And Effectiveness
Coming off of using a toothpaste that I didn’t love all too much, on first impression I quite liked the Native toothpaste consistency. It was smooth and not too runny like the previous “natural” toothpaste I used and the flavor was nice and refreshing. There was enough foaming action for thorough cleaning and afterwards my teeth felt smooth and clean and my breath was minty fresh. The smoothness and clean feeling of my teeth lasted all day although the minty freshness was not long lasting.
Effectiveness/Long Term Use
My overall thoughts? For me, this is more of a mixed review. While I did like this product and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that there were no unnecessary ingredients and chemicals in the formulation, I don’t know if there is anything to justify the cost of $10 for a tube of toothpaste. I have not really noticed any whitening effects over the last month, so for me the whitening effects of this toothpaste are minimal at best.
What I do love most about this toothpaste is the fact that the flavor is refreshing (although not long lasting) and the ingredients are naturally derived. With that said, as a pediatric dentist and a vocal supporter of all things prevention, I also love that this toothpaste comes in both fluoridated and fluoride free varieties. While not everyone needs fluoride in their toothpaste, there are many people that benefit from it - and to have that option in a naturally sourced ingredient toothpaste is a great thing.
Overall, if you are willing to spend the extra few dollars, this is a great toothpaste. If you are into saving, there are other brands (even “clean” non toxic ones) out there that deliver the same quality!
Price
The cost is $10.00 for 4.1 oz
